ABWA 2009 Womens Suffrage

American Business Women’ Association ABWA 2009 Business Meeting, Punta Gorda Charter Chapter – Guest Speaker the Honorable Paul A. Stamoulis, Charlotte County Supervisor of Elections – Topic Women’s Right To Vote!

August 26, 2009 the 89th Anniversary – “The Nineteenth Amendment is ratified. Its victory accomplished…!” Simply stated, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.  Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

On Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the Kings Gate Community restaurant twenty-four members of the Punta Gorda Chapter of the ABWA were in attendance and hosted the Supervisor of Elections, Hon. Paul A. Stamoulis. Program Chair Patricia Dyson put together a wonderful program and selected this most appropriate guest speaker, given the fact that this day in history was surely historical for all women.

Chapter President, Andrea Carroll introduced Paul who returned the introduction with a gift to honor the special day.  Opening by posing a question to the audience, Paul asked “Does anyone know what historical event occurred on this day, which pertains particularly to this group?” Carolyn Racco piped up immediately with the correct answer.  He then began his presentation speaking in detail about Women’s Suffrage and their right to vote. Paul also spoke about the Adopt-A-Precinct Partnership that his office makes available, which could meet some of the fund-raising goals of this worthy organization. Fielding a lively question and answer session, the Supervisor felt honored to have been invited to speak on such a timely subject.

Randy Ann Bechtel had Poll Worker applications and Adopt-A-Precinct Partnership brochures available for all who were interested.  Joined by several members of his staff, including the Assistant Supervisor of Elections, Blanche House, Qualifying Officer, Sandy Wharton, Outreach Coordinator, Randy Ann Bechtel, and retired Senior Outreach Coordinator, Soni Stover the Supervisor’s office was well represented.  This very attentive audience enjoyed meeting and mingling with the Supervisor.  Many expressed an interest in becoming more involved during election times as they spoke favorably of the compendium of information that Paul shared.
